This map shows the railway networks of Australia as they were circa 1950. This was near the peak of the extent of the network prior to line closures and rationalisations that followed WW2
Goods and passenger railways are shown. Most rail routes at this time carried both types of train. The different rail gauges are indicated by line colours - legend at bottom left of diagram.
Not all stations are shown or named, and some line detail is not shown in areas of high density - particularly around the suburbs of major cities and in regards to sugar cane tramways in Queensland. For a more comprehensive map of cane tramways, visit this excellent site by William Thompson which is the source from which I have crudely summarised main cane routes here.
Australian Rail Maps is an independent small business.
Since 1996 we have published online maps, timetables and journey planners to help visitors, residents, commuters and travellers get the most from Australia's extensive but un-integrated train, tram, bus and ferry networks.

We believe train travel, and public transport generally, has so much potential, and we want to share the possibilites with everyone. Enjoy your travels.
